What is Hypnotherapy?
What Hypnotherapy IS NOT.
Hypnotize yourself: self-hypnosis inductions for common concerns
Hypnotherapy has been in use since ancient times to alleviate pain in a wide range of conditions and improve physical and mental health. Relief from chronic pain conditions, control additive behavior, pain relief from dental and childbirth procedures; self hypnosis is used in everyday control with stress management and the minor pain relief from everyday lifestyles.
The therapeutic use of hypnosis has gotten a "bad rap" in the minds of many because of the use of stage hypnosis to mystify and entertain audiences. Your natural gift of imagination can be put to positive use in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a productive life into when you are a centurion. Hypnotherapy has successfully been used for centuries and is now one of the most scientifically validated alternative therapies in use today.
WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?
Your Unconscious Mind is the control center deep within your brain that directs everything you do; like the software in your computer. It doesn't think or evaluate, that is the job of your Conscious Mind which stands guard to let only what it wants to happen, like the input from your keyboard. Hence, if we wish to change behavior or thought patterns and therefore the results which show up in our actions and bodily functions; we must put the conscious mind "to sleep" and talk directly to the unconscious mind. Some people believe that the eternal spirit, the essence of who we are, resides within the unconscious. I'm one of those believers as it makes logical sense for why we are here and provides the physics for our living essence.
Hypnosis, therefore, has been referred to as a "trance-like state". Each of us goes through this state at least twice each day; when we go to sleep, and when we wake up.
Modern hypnotherapy protocols have shown that a "light-trance" state is preferable to a "deep-trance" when dealing with therapeutic issues. While you are in this light-trance you are more suggestible and willing to accept new information, without the "sentinel conscious mind" checking all incoming communications.
We can then make positive suggestions which you will store in your mind, basically reprogramming it to accept or reject certain beliefs or patterns of behavior. Lets assume you have a fear (phobia) of flying. The therapist can suggest that you love flying and really enjoy the benefits. If you are truly willing to conqueror your phobia of flying, your unconscious mind will eagerly absorb this suggestion by replacing your phobia with a more positive love and emotion. The same can happen with pain because the mind is a powerful partner of your Body, Mind, Spirit trinity.
The desire of the unconscious is so strong that it will always override a conscious desire. As an example, you might make a conscious wish to stop smoking (which you probably do every January first), but if your unconscious does not want to, then you will not stop. Hypnotherapy can be very effective for treating addiction, phobias, traumas, and stress-related conditions.
This interaction of Mind/Body can be demonstrated when during a hypnotic trance breathing, heart rate and metabolism can be slowed, allergic reactions stopped and pain reduced. Every thought you have shows itself as some physical change in the body and emotions. This is why physical or emotional problems can leave such pronounced mental scars.
So hypnotherapy will work for you if you truly have a desire and willingness to change. A good imagination is also helpful.
WHAT HYPNOTHERAPY IS NOT!
You will not do anything under hypnosis that your moral code or spiritual awareness will not allow.
You will not divulge any "secrets" while under hypnosis.
You will be aware of everything that happens and what is said. In fact, many clients don't feel like they have been hypnotized until they experience the positive changes in their life for which they sought hypnotherapy. |
